Cars and The total Filling Station submerged in water
History of flooding in major cities in the country has been reported over the years but it seems continuous measures adopted to end the disaster have proved futile.

Accra yet to recover from recent flooding

Accra is yet to recover from floods that took lives two weeks ago from a similar downpour. Parts of the Garden City, Kumasi have also flooded after hours of downpour yesterday.

The rain which started around 4:30 pm and after two hours, commuters using the Kumasi-Ejisu highway couldn’t access the road to their various homes due to the Kumasi flood. Several areas in the metropolis including some part of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Buokrom, Oduom, Aboabo etc. have also been affected by the Kumasi flood after the downpour.

Challenges faced by road users, hawkers and businesses Journeys were interrupted as the highway was not accessible at some point in time and passengers had to alight and cross to board other cars to their homes. An eyewitness lamented, I almost drowned crossing to the other side during the Kumasi flood.

Wares of hawkers and carpenters who operate on the sides of the road are believed to have been washed away.  Kumasi flood reborn

The Kumasi flood which use to be imminent on the onset of rains stopped after the construction of storm drains along the Subin river channel years ago. This incident is a wakeup call for authorities to rethink the maintenance culture and projects evaluation within the metropolis.

It was reported last year (citifmonline) that dredging of the Pelele stream to end perennial flooding in Aboabo and its environs was halted. This stream is a tributary to the Subin River which transects through the city and is constantly stuffed with plastic and metal waste due to activities of squatters in the area.

 Safety First during floods

Passengers and drivers stuck at both ends were reported to be rushing to make it home which could lead to injuries, accidents or loss of life during a flood. The public is hereby, advised to find higher elevations or a safe place to stay and wait for flood waters to recede before continuing their journeys during floods. The drivers are as well advised to a park at parking stops during such heavy downpours in areas prone to flooding.
