Mrs Charlotte Osei - Ghana Electoral Commission Chairperson

Cause of Mrs Charlotte Osei's removal

An investigation was launched into Mrs Charlotte Osei’s alleged inappropriate misconduct upon petition from some angry employees of the Electoral Commission (E.C) of the Republic of Ghana by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo after the president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akoffo-Addo forwarded the petition to her.

Their plea to Nana Addo was to dismiss Charlotte Osei as the chairman of the commission following allegations of misconduct.

The employees made these allegations due to an alleged misappropriation of funds, compromise of the neutrality of the Electoral Commission as an independent institution by Charlotte Osei.

Decision by Government on the E.C case

A letter released on Thursday, 28th June 2018, signed by the minister of information, Hon. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid (PHD) announced the dismissal of the chairman of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies, Mr Amadu Sulley and Ms Georgina Opoku Amankwah with immediate effect.

Preliminary Investigation into E.C and three deputies

This action was after the committee set up by the Chief Justice, pursuant to article 146(4) of the constitution of the Republic of Ghana to investigate separate complaints brought against the chairperson, Charlotte Osei and her two deputies by Ghanaian citizens, recommended their removal from office.

The committee made this recommendation on the basis of stated misbehaviour and incompetence, pursuant to Article 146(1) of the constitution.

Persons directed to vacate positions at the Electoral Commission

The three persons in the persons of Mrs Charlotte Osei, Mr Amadu Sulley and Ms Georgina Opoku Amankwah are to hand over their respective schedules to the Human Resource Director of the Electoral Commission.

Yawpreko's take on E.C chairs conduct and delivery of responsibilities

I personally had doubt prior to the 2016 general election due to reports on the E.C chair, Mrs Charlotte Osei by the commentators and parliamentarians of the minority but my doubts were cleared after the conduct of the election 2016.

Aside from the accuse and outcry, Mrs Charlotte Osei made advancement in our election procedures including the pasting of declared results at each pooling station which I perceive as the best. This directive gave citizens, political parties, the media and international observers’ unrestricted access to election results that were declared at a various polling station in the country and I personally praise her for that.

As a woman, she did her best and Ghana will remember her not because what is thrown into the media but what each and everyone observed that have painted an image she deserves. Farewell Mrs Charlotte Osei for your years of service to the nation.

This directive will spark public discussion, especially the minority who believed the move was politically powered and a plan for the ruling party to control major institutions in the country.

Do you think this is rule of law or political gain?
